Different window well materials offer varying levels of durability and longevity

Window well materials play a crucial role in the durability and longevity of basement protection systems. Abarent Construction, a foundation repair and underpinning piling company serving Edmonton and Vancouver since 1989, offers expert advice and installation services for various window well materials. With over 35 years of experience, Abarent Construction provides tailored solutions to ensure optimal performance and longevity of window wells, protecting basements from water damage and structural issues.

Galvanized steel offers superior protection against corrosion

Galvanized steel window wells boast exceptional corrosion resistance due to their zinc coating applied through hot-dip galvanization. These window wells typically last 20-30 years with minimal maintenance, requiring only occasional cleaning and inspection. Galvanized steel options may have a higher initial cost compared to some materials, but their long-term cost-effectiveness and durability often justify the investment. Homeowners can customize galvanized steel window wells through painting or powder coating, enhancing their aesthetic versatility while maintaining structural integrity.

Comparing galvanized steel to thermoplastic window wells

Galvanized steel generally outperforms thermoplastic in UV resistance, maintaining its structural integrity for longer periods. The weight difference between galvanized steel and thermoplastic is significant, with thermoplastic being lighter and easier to install. Cost-wise, thermoplastic window wells are often less expensive initially, but galvanized steel may offer better long-term value due to its durability. While thermoplastic wells have improved in strength, they typically cannot match the load-bearing capacity and durability of galvanized steel window wells, especially in harsh climates.

Polymer-based window wells resist cracking and fading

Polymer window wells excel in extreme temperature conditions due to their thermal expansion properties, maintaining structural integrity in both hot and cold climates. These wells are available in a wide range of colors, utilizing advanced color retention technology to resist fading. Many polymer window wells are engineered with sufficient load-bearing capacity to support emergency egress, meeting building code requirements. With proper installation and maintenance, polymer window wells can last 15-25 years before needing replacement, thanks to their UV stabilizers and impact resistance.

This is how window well materials offer varying levels of durability

Key Advantages of Polymer-Based Window Wells

  • Resistance to cracking and fading
  • Wide range of color options
  • Excellent thermal properties
  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Lightweight for easy installation
  • Non-corrosive nature
  • Cost-effective long-term solution

Are polymer window wells eco-friendly options?

Many polymer window wells incorporate recycled materials, with some manufacturers using up to 40% recycled content. The carbon footprint of polymer wells is generally lower than metal alternatives due to reduced energy requirements in production and transportation. Most polymer window wells are recyclable at the end of their life cycle, contributing to circular economy principles. These wells can provide better insulation for basements compared to metal options, potentially improving energy efficiency and reducing heating and cooling costs.

Concrete window wells provide lasting structural support

Concrete window wells often outlast other materials, with a lifespan of 30-50 years or more when properly maintained. Poured concrete offers superior strength and customization options, while precast wells provide faster installation and consistent quality. Concrete window wells can be customized to match unique architectural designs through various finishing techniques and integrated features. Regular maintenance for concrete wells includes inspecting for cracks, sealing joints, and ensuring proper drainage to maintain their watertight properties and structural integrity.

What waterproofing methods work best for concrete wells?

Crystalline waterproofing additives are highly effective for concrete window wells, forming a permanent barrier against water penetration. High-quality polyurethane or silicone-based sealants provide excellent protection for concrete window well joints, accommodating movement and temperature changes. Hydrophobic coatings can significantly improve concrete well longevity by repelling water and reducing moisture absorption. Waterproofing treatments for concrete wells typically need reapplication every 5-10 years, depending on environmental conditions and the specific products used.

Fiberglass window wells blend durability with lightweight design

Fiberglass window wells offer an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, providing robust performance while being easier to handle during installation. These wells perform well in areas with high water tables due to their corrosion resistance and impermeability. Fiberglass window wells are available in various colors and can be custom-tinted to match home exteriors. In regions with frequent temperature fluctuations, fiberglass wells maintain their structural integrity due to their low thermal expansion coefficient, resisting cracking and warping in extreme conditions.

Can fiberglass window wells be repaired if damaged?

Minor cracks, chips, and surface damage in fiberglass window wells can often be repaired using specialized epoxy resins or fiberglass repair kits. DIY repair kits are available for small damages, allowing homeowners to perform simple fixes. Professional restoration of fiberglass wells is generally more cost-effective than full replacement, especially for wells with minor to moderate damage. Expert refurbishment services can significantly extend the lifespan of damaged fiberglass window wells, restoring structural integrity and appearance through advanced composite patching techniques and gelcoat repair methods.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a job well done. After this past weekend’s deluge, our basement was left completely dry.

Aileen & Wayne Dembicki

It is terrific to see that your company’s motto of “Quality without Compromise” is more than just words… The job was completed ahead of schedule and the workers ensured that when they left, the yard looked just like it did when they arrive. Well, actually it looked better…

Don and Eve Neil

We have had our fair share of unremarkable and even troublesome experiences with other contractors, so you guys were certainly a breath of fresh air. An honest contractor, bang on with the timeline, finished on time, within budget, your “nothing is too much trouble” attitude…and a job well done.

Michael Abbott

Abarent provided a 3-page, itemized list of the specific work to be done at each stage of the project, including descriptions of optional issues (including additional costs) that might arise during the work. The company president did the initial walk-through for their estimate and later went through it, line by line. He pointed out potential problems and things we had to prepare for during the work (extra cracks, concrete dust, effects on neighbors, etc.)… Repairing a foundation is a very traumatic event for any householder because all of your house investment is (literally!) in the air. If you have to do it, call Abarent. They are professional – we cannot recommend them highly enough.
